Bowale: Interview with SKRT Magazine

SKRT Magazine catches up with artist Bowale on our mellow #SKRTview segment.

Bowale is a Nigerian musical artist. He talks his style, inspirations, released and forthcoming projects; his debut EP in 2018 titled “NIGHTS LIKE THESE” and his sophomore “THE LOVE MERCHANT VOL 1, his creative process, relationships & more exclusive to

1. Tell us about yourself
I am a proud Nigerian who was raised in Ibadan. I studied English and International studies at Osun State University and have been making music professionally since 2017 when i released my first single titled AFRO LOVE. I play the guitar and when I am not making music I am a Creative writer, but that’s a hat I wear only when I have to.
2. What influences the art/music you create?
How my mind precepts events and my experiences on a daily basis. I love to tell a story through my music, you know the type that offers the listener the opportunity of experiencing the music with me.
3. What genre or style are you sticking to ?
Ummmmmm, for now I am not sticking to one particular genre. I would say I am experimenting with different genres and styles at this stage in my career. Although most would say i have really explored AFRO POP.

4. What sparked your interest in making music?
A long list of entertainers I was obsessed with growing up. ASA, CHRIS BROWN, MICHEAL JACKSON, STYLE PLUS, WANDE COAL and also my insane love for the guitar.
5. What projects have you released or planning to release?
I released my debut EP in 2018 titled “NIGHTS LIKE THESE” and my sophomore “THE LOVE MERCHANT VOL 1 this year in February. Who knows there might just be a VOL 2
6. What keeps you motivated, what is your creative process ?
It’s something I can feel, so I don’t pretend to be motivated when I’m not and I would say it’s when I feel the need to express myself through music. My creative process is quite simple, I like to listen to instrumentals on loop and just try to find a suitable melody for it. The writing part comes easy once I’ve crossed that path.

7. What more to expect from your brand in the future?
*laughs* A bit more exploration of genres with loads of records and definitely a creative visual campaign because I have some records I want to tell visual stories through.
8. Who are you eager to collaborate with?
Ladipoe, Joeboy, Mayorkun, Tems, Amaraae..the list goes. Because to be honest I have a befitting record for these talents.

9. What is your fashion sense saying?
a Gentleman that’s hip.
10. Poison of choice?
Orijin bitters, Jameson or Hennessy.
11. Describe your social & romantic relationship status?
My social status is very accomodating..I like to expand my circle as long as I’m learning something important from that person. I’m an open book. Romantic status? Well I’m seeing someone.
12. First Date Ideas?
Drive out to a park, get food and wine and a Bluetooth speaker. Sit on the roof of the car and just eat and talk while some low tempo record is on.
13. Favorite whip/car?
Lamborghini Urus.
14. Vacay country/countries of choice ?
Maldives, Seychelles or any carribean country. I’m a beach bum hahaha.
15. Soda or Water?
16. Workout routine?
50 push ups in the morning and another 50 at night. Sit ups on weekends and football whenever I get the chance.
17. How do you uplift your self spiritually and mentally?
Music music music and I read a lot of articles online. It’s crazy how learning about new things reduces stress for me.
18. What impact do you plan to leave on society?
Create a functioning system where creatives can thrive. And I don’t mean survive I said “Thrive”.
19. Who is/are your mentor(s)?
Every young person out there who’s made it out the gutter.
20. Give a quote(s) you want to be remembered by?
Love is the greatest weapon.
