SKRT Magazine catches up with artist Ilaye on our interview segment.
She talks her style, influences, released projects, her creative process & more exclusive to www.skrtdaily.com
Tell us about yourself
I’m an alternative singer/songwriter. I was born and raised in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. I love art in all its forms. I love when a moment is just hilarious because of some awkward silence or unexpected humour.
What influences the art/music you create?
My life experiences, my imagination, people, musicians, music
What genre or style are you sticking to?
I never stick to one genre as a person who consumes music and a person who makes music. But I definitely lean more towards alternative with a mix of R&B and soul.
What sparked your interest in making music?
I noticed I had a flair for words and melodies from a young age. That sparked my interest in making music. Also, being around a lot of great music growing up.
What projects have you released or planning to release?
I released my debut EP titled Pneuma in 2019. A couple singles before and after that. And I recently released my second body of work weeks ago (17th June, 2021), titled Sixth Sense. We’re planning on more work between the later part of this year and next year.
What keeps you motivated, what is your creative process?
I want people to hear the music and share in the experience and feel great because of it. Also, my family and myself.
I like to take it slow because ‘can’t rush greatness’ *Laughs*. Most of my songs come to me out of the blue or when I’m not thinking about it. I just record, write or archive them as they come. The times I sit down to create; I like to be alone, well rested and aware. I usually start with the melodies and fill in the lyrics on the go.
What more to expect from your brand in the future?
More music, visuals and immaculate vibes.
Who are you eager to collaborate with?
Amaarae, Ladipoe, Jhene Aiko, Jessie Reyez, Lorde, etc.
What is your fashion sense saying?
I’m intentional. I’m confident. I’m against the policing of women’s bodies and fashion choices. I like to feel comfortable. I do what I want, not what you think I should do.
Poison of choice?
Describe your social & romantic relationship status?
I have a small circle of great friends and I love them. I adore everyone who listens to my music. Even though I don’t know them personally, I consider them friends, cos if they love the music, they get it. They get me. My romantic life is alright.
First Date Ideas?
First date? Amazing food, humour, conversation, drinks, music. The basics.
Vacay country/countries of choice?
Soda or Water?
Sit-ups and crunches; and dancing.
How do you uplift yourself spiritually and mentally?
I meditate in between tasks. I do a lot of yoga. I pray.
What impact do you plan to leave on society?
I want people to feel great about themselves, less obsessed with their quirks or insecurities. I want people to feel comfortable discussing mental health issues. I want women to feel respected. I want more people to understand that it’s dumb to treat others poorly because of some difference in gender, class, race, belief, background, sexual orientation, etc. I want a lot of things and I hope to contribute to the process of achieving these things in society with my music and existence. But a step at a time.
Who is/are your mentor(s)?
Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse, Avril Lavigne, 2 face Idibia, Asa, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, too many to mention.
Give a quote(s) you want to be remembered by?
‘Don’t ask for permission, take up space and say less’.
Thanks for pulling up, Looking forward to seeing you at the next SKRTFest event
