SKRT Magazine catches up with artist Yung D3mz on our interview segment.
He talks his style, influences, released projects, his creative process & more exclusive to www.skrtdaily.com
Tell us about yourself
My name is Yung D3mz, aka Yung Yung or D3mzy, or the Yung Lord *laughs*. I’m a singer, songwriter and producer from Tema, Ghana. But I’ve been around Africa, residing in Uganda then Zambia at different points of my life. Growing up my favourite hobby aside from playing football was listening to music. Old or new, I was just looking for something nice to listen to. I guess living around is one of the main influences on my sound. Eventually I picked up the guitar and my interest peaked from there. I have a couple of hits as a producer, and I recently started my journey as an artist.
What influences the art/music you create?
The life and people around me influence how I think perceive the world. And my music is just an extension of what goes on in my head. So, I’d say largely my environment, but also pop culture. I wanna contribute greatly to it, as a creative visionary.
What genre or style are you sticking to?
I haven’t really boxed myself into one specific genre. But I would say afro-fusion is the type of music I make the most, hip-hop being my other thing I’m really into at the moment. For now, those are the styles I’m rocking with.
What sparked your interest in making music?
The love of listening to great music brought out the inspiration to try and make my own. Seeing some of the greats releasing timeless records or even watching them work in the studio from YouTube clips shaped my early interest.
What projects have you released or planning to release?
I’ve released a joint project titled Girls Like You(EP) with producers Boye ‘the Genius’ and Uche B.
Also, I recently released my solo debut EP, Yung. I’m planning to release a second volume of Yung in the coming year.
What keeps you motivated, what is your creative process ?
My main goal keeps me motivated, and that is to become a legend and a voice of the youth. I know what it takes to reach that status, which is why I emulate traits of some of the greats who’ve done it before. It keeps me grounded in the studio. Music is a lifestyle for me, so my creative process is fluid. Making a lit song is the mission of the day. Also, money.
What more to expect from your brand in the future?
I’d expect growth in a creative sense. I’d want fans and potential business partners to see a more mature version of myself in all aspects of my creativity. I wanna get into fashion and actually design real stuff myself with dope brands. I wanna weave through different genres and make it work. I wanna begin to start working with my own artist(s). Basically, I wanna take Yung D3mz global, as a brand for the young at heart worldwide.
Who are you eager to collaborate with?
Burna Boy, Pharrell Williams, Wizkid, Vigro Deep, 6lack, Cochise, Santi, Kid Laroi, Blxckie, Black Coffee, Polo G, Richard Bona, Tiwa Savage, Wiyaala, Scott Storch, Angelique Kidjo, P2J, Jae5. The list is definitely longer but these are the people that I’d love to work with currently.
What is your fashion sense saying?
My fashion is pretty much street fashion and a bit of high fashion. I’m trying new things offlate though, like grungy fits or putting on avant-garde designs. Been trying on some Japanese inspired fits too, especially with Evisu jeans. I have a clothing addiction for Evisu’s actually. I’m also inspired by rock and disco fashion, and style throughout the 80s and 90s. I think I’m gonna get more hands-on with my style soon, and show people another side to it.
Poison of choice?
The Jack Daniels with the honey goes off brazy, that stuff is amazing.
Describe your social & romantic relationship status?
Very much single right now *laughs*. And I don’t think I’m looking to change it. I’ll let life do its thing, who knows? But for now, I’m focused on the job. I think it’s kinda demanding, and it might be weird if I got into a relationship at this stage.
First Date Ideas?
A cooking date would be lit can’t lie. With the right person, going to an art gallery could be funny as hell. Going thrifting together seems like an awesome idea too.
I want an Aventador so bad. I’m a car lover so it’s not a very car nerd choice. But Aventadors look like space ships.
Vacay country/countries of choice ?
Seychelles, Kenya, Jamaica, Thailand, South Africa or Japan.
Soda or Water?
It’s a terrible thing I wanna stop drinking, but soda. If I’m keeping it a stack.
I don’t work out much, and once a week I go for a run. I play football every Sunday.
How do you uplift yourself spiritually and mentally?
Some alone time with meditation always keeps me mentally fit and spiritually aligned. Sometimes I do it at the beach. I try to pray and meditate everyday. Sometimes I don’t need music to do it. I just need silence and peace to focus on my thoughts. Playing football helps too, mentally it makes me move with sport-like ambition.
What impact do you plan to leave on society?
I wanna be a symbol of love and positivity. I also wanna contribute to my community when I can, and give back to the environment that I came from. I was born in the port city of Tema, so I would like people in my city to see me as a representative of our culture.
Who is/are your mentor(s)?
Killbeatz, Omar Sterling, Kwesi Arthur and Guiltybeatz are people I regard as mentors in the game. Currently when I have burning questions about the industry that I can’t figure out they drop a lot of gems.
Give a quote(s) you want to be remembered by?
Normal is an illusion. What is normal for a spider is chaos for a fly. Do you. As long as you’re not hurting others, your dream is as valid as anyone else’s.
Thanks for pulling up, Looking forward to seeing you at the next SKRT Fest event.
